Activity Description

This is a CME activity intended to educate health care professionals on understanding statistical analyses of clinical trials, differentiating between statistical and clinical significance, and utilizing number needed to treat (NNT).

Intended Audience

This activity is designed to meet the educational needs of pain specialists, orthopedic surgeons, physiatrists, psychiatrists, neurologists, primary care providers, rheumatologists, and any others involved in the treatment of pain in osteoarthritis.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this educational activity, learners should be able to:

  1. Recognize how the use of P values and relative risk reduction statistics may lead to errors in the interpretation of the clinical significance of trial results
  2. Demonstrate the basic method of calculating absolute risk reduction and NNT
  3. Apply NNT statistical methodology to sample clinical trial results pertaining to pain in osteoarthritis
  4. Demonstrate judicious clinical decision making incorporating statistical evaluation of trial results expressed as NNT
